Canelé Table Lamp by Leclercq Viallet
Canelé Table Lamp is Paris-based duo Leclercq Viallet's first design for HAY, defined by the interplay of folded steel and pleated textile. Lit, it becomes a glowing sculpture, finding its place equally well on a table, a shelf, or a windowsill. Casting a warm, coloured hue, Canelé is available in Warm White, Tomato Red, Almond Green, and Soft Blue.
The lamp took shape not on paper but in the studio's workshop – folding and assembling flat metal elements, working through the problem in three dimensions. Canelé first came to life as a collection of handcrafted gallery objects with paper lampshades, before being translated into industrial production for HAY. It takes its name from the fluted French pastry from Bordeaux, sharing its distinctive vertical fluted aesthetic – modest in scale, pleasing in form.
The design works through an elegant tension between opposites. 'What makes this lamp surprising lies in its construction: a soft lampshade pinched into a metal structure,' say Leclercq Viallet. A slender three-legged steel frame – graphic and architectural – holds the pleated textile shade in place simply by pinching it. The shade is a single colour, but the folds create a subtle striped effect, adding depth and giving the silhouette a soft, organic quality that appears almost to float.
